Drumming Outside the Lines is a new project that I’m excited to share with you! I’ve had an idea for many years to come up with a performing ensemble that blends Celtic music with a wide range of percussion influences.
In September of 2016, I was incredibly fortunate to meet Kit Chatham of Cirque du Soleil’s Kurios when the show was in the D.C. area. We discovered that we had quite a bit of shared background, to include pipe band percussion and the bodhrán. When I told Kit about my idea, he was really excited to start collaborating on some ideas. I enlisted the help of my friends and colleagues Alex Kuldell, Josh Dukes, and Ryan Mullins to play on the track that we were coming up with.
The first tune featured is “The Congress Reel”, which is loosely based on the Irish trad tune called “Gravel Walk”, and was arranged by long-time City of Washington Pipe Band Pipe Major Mike Green. The second tune goes by several different names, but we’ve used the name “St. Patrick’s An Dro”. This tune is a traditional tune from Galicia, and was made popular by Carlos Nunez.
At this point, all of the members of Drumming Outside the Lines have busy performing careers, many of us in the U.S. Army Fife and Drum Corps. As such, I’m not sure where we’ll end up going with this project. We feel lucky that with modern technology, we’re able to put together a video like the one below while not all in the same state, let alone the same room! We have several more ideas in mind, so watch this space for more videos like this one!
